So, as you’re probably sick of hearing about atm, I’ve been offered this incredible opportunity by a major comics news site to be a roving reporter at New York Comic Con.
This is a great chance for me that came out of a huge bit of luck for me. The website owner has seen some of my writing in the past and we’ve met a couple of times so when I made a comment that it’d be cool, he offered me this opportunity.
The only catch? I need to pay for my own flights and accommodation.
I know, right? It’s quite a bit to pay, but hey, it’s doable…with help.
But why should you help me?
Well, aside from the goodness of your own hearts (or you think I’m cute…some of you do, right? Please?), I have had something of a hard time getting the kind of work that not only I want, but I have worked and studied for. I want to write full time…creative, magazine, journalism. Anything.
The problem is, whenever I apply for such jobs, I nearly always get the same response: “I’m sorry, but you don’t have the right/enough experience.”
I find this to be taking the piss a little tbh. I have been writing freelance for a while now. I have written articles for Gay Times Magazine here in the UK. I have done articles for Sidekickcast, Bleeding Cool and others. And I write my own comics, The Pride and The Pride Adventures and co-write on Stiffs.
Last year, I even had two weeks unpaid work experience/internship at GT Magazine (which was epic btw, and I thank everyone who made that possible last year still).
This new opportunity now would give me an AMAZING piece of experience to add to my CV, and show the lengths I will go to for a story and any chance. It would help show what I’m capable of, as well as a chance to write a bunch of new pieces to add to my already decently sized portfolio.
But there’s more! I mentioned I make comics, right?
Whilst I may not have a table at NYCC, this trip would afford me another incredible opportunity: opening the comics to a whole new audience that may not be aware of them. Meeting with editors/publishers/pros and getting my books names out there. I also intend to make some special business cards to drum up business.
All in all, it’s an opportunity I cannot afford to miss out on.
So I said I needed your help.
There’s so far a couple ways in which you can help. If you haven’t yet, you can order my comics at The Pride online store here! Or Stiffs online store here!
The second way is you can donate anything you can spare, as low as £1, to my NY fund and get me out there.
I’ve had some incredible donations so far (someone funded £100! AMAZING!) but I still have a long way to go.
So please, if you have ever had ‘experience’ thrown in your face when applying for a dream job; if you’ve ever felt like the big opportunities always happen to someone else and not you; if you love supporting gay artists and comic books or just like my fuzzy face, please, please, please help however you can.
Donate/Buy/Reblog/Share and let me take this astounding chance of a lifetime.
Thanks guys! Love you all!
P.S. I am also always open to suggestions and help in regards to cheaper flights or accommodation, or offers of somewhere to crash in the New York City area. So please get in touch! You know I’m a lovely house guest, yes?
