Gay Writer To DC Comics: 'Be Better,' Be Like Superman

projectqueer:

BY

Superman_card

Gay journalist and Superman aficionado Glen Weldon won’t be reading Orson Scott Card’s Superman storyIt’s not only that Card’s an anti-gay activist who works with the National Organization for Marriage, it’s because of the character at hand, Superman. It would be a different story if Card were commissioned to helm a story starring a minor character — oft-mocked Matter-Eater Lad, the avowed geek suggests — but Superman’s different; ” he’s the superhero.”

“Superman is an ideal,” Weldon writes at NPR. “He represents our best self. That’s what he’s for. He’s not the hero we identify with — that’s what Spider-Man is for… In Superman, we see ourselves as we hope to be. It’s right there in the name — he’s not ‘Pretty Good Man’ or ‘Doesn’t Suck Man’; he’s Superman. He personifies our noblest ideals, ideals we believe in, and strive for…”

Weldom reminds readers that Superman was originally a “champion of the oppressed,” but has picked up some other fitting nicknames along the way, including “man of tomorrow.”

One of the other nicknames that accrued to Superman right away – that predates “Man of Steel” by a good amount – is “The Man of Tomorrow.” And much of his early iconography bears a distinctive Socio-Realist, Diego Rivera vibe: a lot of burnished golden sunrises, eyes raised to the horizon, gazing into the future.

Because that’s where he lives, Superman. And that’s what he says to us: We can do better. We can be better, to ourselves, and to each other.

Hey, DC Comics? Be better.

So far it seems DC is standing by their decision to hire Card for the two-part digital story. The company said in a statement, “As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that — personal views — and not those of the company itself.”

I want kids to read comics. I want kids to fall in love with comics like I did.
And I want the people who write them to love kids, all kids.
Just like Superman.

Precisely why I am against the idea of Orson Scott Card writing Superman

DC Comics Hires Homophobic Sci-Fi Author Orson Scott Card to Pen New Superman Series

sugaronastick:

DC Comics just announced a digital-first series called the Adventures of Superman this week, which is launching in April, Comics Alliance reports:

Among those contributing are ComicsAlliance favorites Jeff Parker (Bucko, Red She-Hulk) and Chris Samnee (Daredevil, The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom), who will collaborate on a story about Superman’s first encounter with Lex Luthor. But before that, Adventures of Superman begins with a two-part story written by popular novelist Orson Scott Card (Ender’s Game) and drawn by the great Chris Sprouse and Karl Story

Unfortunately, for DC Comics, Card is a well-known homophobe and anti-gay activist who in 2008 called for the overthrow of government if Prop 8 fails.

If you want a good sample of his writings on gays, check out this column entitled Homosexual “Marriage” and Civilization.

Reblogged for your information. What you decide to do with it is up to you. Myself, I will not buy this book on principle. As I respect the other creators I may pick up after Card’s involvement is over. But we’ll see. I’m rather unhappy he’s involved at all

Not only has DC Comics hired anti-gay bigot Orson Scott Card to write a Superman story, but Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston thinks I don’t have the right to be pissed about it: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/02/07/orson-scott-card-superman-and-here-we-go-again/Rich, there’s a difference between political beliefs and bigotry. There really is. My mom is both a Republican AND someone who believes I’m entitled to civil rights. Also, Card is not just a de facto activist because he’s famous. HE’S ON THE BOARD OF NOM.
Basically I’m just pissed that a Superman comic is coming out and, for the first time in my entire life, I will not buy it. Shame on you, DC.

Signal fucking BOOOOOST.
I stopped reading Bleeding Cool around Christmas time because Rich Johnston pulled some more shady, grody, inappropriate stuff.

I think what Rich was trying to say is it’s dodgy ground to say ‘I think everyone should boycott this because of MY morals’…rather, that should be done based on your own morals and decision etc.
To do the prior isn’t any different from what One Million Moms tries (and spectacularly fails) to do every time there is something gay in any form of media.
However, the very nature of his article does inform the reader of the concerns behind those wanting to boycott this book, and Card’s connection to NOM.
It’s also pointing out that this book is not all Card, but rather a number of creators. Card is merely involved, as sadly, he is popular.
Personally, I liked this post and am reblogging it because it is spreading the word about Card’s connections, homophobia and ‘morals’. Also, my personal decision is to not buy this book, due to Card’s involvement. I can’t say this will change DCs stance on hiring him, but then I would not be surprised by that.
I am not about to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do. I will just say that personally I take issue with Card and his bigotry and choose not to support him or his endeavors.

Variant Cover for Earth 2 by Reis and Prado.

dcwomenkickingass:

Yes Wonder Woman is wearing thigh high boots and a skirt. I can’t even imagine what Power Girl will wear on this earth …

Well, Wonder Woman of Earth 2’s costume design is frankly incredibly similar to Muscle Mary’s in The Pride now. Headgear is a similar shape. Only annoys me because it will make it look like we copied this design by the time The Pride’s further issues come out.

The Death and Return of Superman, A Parody of Superman’s History

Still hilarious and one of the best comic rants I’ve seen in ages

This is hilarious, and largely accurate, and actually quite educational about comics.

Also, it’s by Max Landis, John Landis’ son and screenwriter of Chronicle I believe.

And additional, it has Elijah Woods’ nipple in it. Yay!

Indistinguishable From Magic: Rebooting the Justice League!

dresdencodak:

So, following the immense popularity of my 5 Essential Character Redesigns post, I decided to take a more thorough stab at revamping DC Comic’s Justice League. I’ve already mentioned before that I think their current “New 52” reboot, aimed at gaining new readers, is terribly ineffective,…

This is just utterly fantastic. I want to read this book, now
